Melissa and I woke up early and jet lagged on our first morning in Tokyo. We did what I always do when arriving in a new and unknown place; get out and walk. We instantly stumbled upon Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden and spent the next few hours wandering through the beautiful trees, manicured traditional gardens, tea houses and ponds feeling like we weren’t in a city at all.
My favourite moment was chatting (mainly an exchange of smiles and pointing) with an elderly man who volunteers with the gardening and maintenance, who gave us a single long stemmed rose each. I can only imagine how beautiful this park would be during Cherry Blossom season or Autumn.
